Bring black the revolution
When every soul brother and soul sister
Were warriors to fight the cause.
And the SNCC sit-ins were befitting
To stop the lynchings and Jim-Crow laws.
Bring black the revolution
When giving emancipation to the colored people was indisputable!
When racism was challenged by a conscience cataclysm,
And being EBONY became so-o-o-o beautiful.
Bring black the revolution
When the Freedom Riders traveled
from Selma to Montgomery
To march and beat on that Truth and Justice drum;
When Afro-solidarity toppled oppression and austerity
With a temerity called "We Shall Overcome".
Bring black the revolution
When Thurgood stood and argued supremely
That segregation was a ghastly gurney that civil society
must dispel.
And every mean case of brutality was dismantled with keen legality
By a defiant giant named Attorney Hollowell.
Bring black the revolution
When civic protests were expressed
In the angry verse of Giovanni, McKay and Baraka.
When young bloods wore saber tooths and dashikis
As they chanted the "Go get 'em" anthems
From Lumumba, Kenyatta and Chaka.
Bring black the revolution
When Angela Davis was the bravest
To step over the apartheid lines.
And Martin Luther King wrote his letter
From a Birmingham jail to assail
The hatred of ignorant minds.
Bring black the revolution
When Black Panthers like Huey and Hampton
Preached liberation and were pronged to raised their fists
To defy America's wrongful colonization as black nationalists!
Bring black the revolution
When his "Soul On Ice" H-Rap Brown was spitting down;
And Stokely Carmichael was breaking ground
For his Soul City town.
When "Right On!" and "Say It Loud!"
Became our self-recognition to be self-endowed.
Bring black the revolution
That left the white-hooded knights/corporate enslavers
stunned and perplexed.
When every ghetto heard its Magna Carta
In the echoes and vehement text
Of the martyr Malcolm X.
Bring black the revolution
When the Watts and Chicago riots
Gave us the diet for rebellion and righteous zeal.
When the Harlem Renaissance gave us
The power and parlance like James Baldwin
To "Go Tell It On The Mountain" still.
Bring black the revolution
When heroes like James Meredith and Eldridge Cleaver
Unmasked the false deceiver.
And the teachings of Mahatmus Ghandi
Made each of us a nonviolent believer.
Bring black the revolution
When by BCN, C.O.R.E., and the Muslim Elijah,
We were organized and instantly led.
When our awakening against supremacy
Became a tour de force widespread.
Bring black the revolution
When we were the champions of a new humanity;
And got assaulted often by water hoses and racial profanity.
When our ire ignited the fire to knock over hypocritical political walls
and to pry open economic doors locked ironclad;
Bring black the revolution
When we were so-o-o Super Fly and so-o-o Super Bad!
