Stand Up!

by Arthurine B. Rice

Stand up for our rights and beliefs
For throughout the years
We've experienced much trouble
Many burdens and unbearable grief.

Those times are here no more
When we were brutally punished
Sometimes lynched while innocently walking
To our own neighborhood grocery stores.

Accomplishments and discoveries we made
Were stolen and credited as their own
With much anger in our hearts we stood
But said nothing because we were so afraid.

It's time for minorities to excel to the top
Dr. Martin Luther King adamantly proclaimed
Love is the answer, hatred due to diversity
And one's skin color has got to stop.

Our children must obtain quality education
No room for ignorance and stupidity,
They must be prepared for the challenge,or
They'll be forgotten about in this bias nation.

Time has come to unite as one
Manifest and activate our black power
Love, togetherness and determination
Is the only way it can be done!

Stand up for our rights and beliefs
For throughout the years,
We've experienced much trouble,
Many burdens and unbearable grief.
