Princess Jobalene

by Arthurine B. Rice

I am a progeny of an african king and queen
          I am of black heritage
My name is Princess Jobalene.

Black is the color of my skin
          My hair, kinky and dark
My legs, bowed, long and thin.

Born not a slave, nor free
          For I stll must struggle
With prejudices held against me.

I am astute and highly motivated
          Because of my darkness
Some thought I could not be educated.

My blackness led many to believe
          I am worthless
The finer things in life I should not receive.

I am a progeny of an african king and queen
          I am of black heritage
My name is Princess Jobalene.

Born not a slave, nor free
          For I still must struggle
With prejudices held against me.
