Immigrants Without Papers

by Akoli Penoukou

In the fifteenth century
Europeans landed in Africa
without invitation letters
without proofs of residence
without visas.
They stayed there for many long years
without any residence permits;
but they, nobody treated them
as immigrants without papers.

When Europeans needed labour
to open up the new world
they carted off millions of our ancestors
for more than four centuries long
without requiring from them any papers
for their sweat was worth more than
mere papers.

In the nineteenth century
Europeans returned to Africa
without invitation letters
without proofs of residence
without visas
to stay there for almost a century
without residence permits.
Haven’t you grasped it all?
You were in our country yesterday
as immigrants without papers
that’s why we are also in yours today
as immigrants without papers
Why all the noise then?!
