The Battle She Can't Win

by Angela D. Connor

It calls her in a tone that’s so sweet
She couldn’t ignore it if she tried.

But all I know, is it’s tearing her apart
She steals, she cheats, she lies.

You wouldn’t know she was so deeply hooked
By just looking in her eyes,

You wouldn’t know it until you held her close
And heard her silent cries.

But it isn’t just herself she’s hurting,
Those who love her suffer deep.

Not a day in my life passes by
that I don’t feel her pain, and weep.

She’s fought it a thousand times and failed
She just can’t take that leap.

It seems the only answer
Is an eternal peaceful sleep.
