Addiction

by Angela D. Connor

It came life a thief in the night
And took her away from us all
No more packed lunches, afternoon picnics
Or weekend trips to the mall.

She stares, but she doesn’t see.
Momma, do you still love me?

The house isn’t clean,
She’s always so mean
I wish she could be who she was.

She won’t iron our clothes
Or take us to school
The neighborhood’s starting to buzz.

The bed isn’t made
The rent isn’t paid
And now we have to leave.

We’re using hot plates
Daddy’s staying out late
And Grandma’s starting to grieve.

It came like a thief in the night
And took her away from us all
Addiction
My mother’s biggest downfall.
