I Am

by Yelf

I am she
I am he
I am them
I am those
I am my ancestors

Over the years,
I have been of many shades
I have been black, mulatto, fair and light.

Over the years
I have been called many names.
I have been negro, colored and black.

Today, I am called
an african american

But, the fact remains
I am still,
Africa.

This poem was dedicated to my daughter Natalie.
