He Said He Loved Her

by Vamecia Powell

He loved her is what he said,
he'd never let her down.
Everytime he'd look for her,
he knew she'd be around.
It all began with a push or two,
then a quick blow to the head.
Next he used a belt,
and whipped her while in bed.
In the next room not too far,
less than ten feet away,
Were the two young kids
that together they made.
The night after the day
when the blows were the worst,
She knew she had to do something
or he would do it first.
That night when he was asleep
she tried to escape,
But he awoke and ran ahead
and locked the front gate.
Before she could get out of the door
he grabbed her by the hair,
She yelled and then screamed,
"This is too much for me to bear."
She broke loose, grabbed a knife
and stabbed him in the chest,
And ironically everyday she visits
the place where he rests.
