I Believe

by Nicole Tricoche

I believe in black nappy heads

Drenched in sun rays

I believe in air and water

I believe in the death and the life

I believe in the sweat of my forefathers

Just like I believe that the eyes can hear

And the mouth can see

I believe in words, color and sound

I believe that Malcolm was a victim

Of black on black crime

And he’s not the last…or the first

I believe in well oiled legs

And long dread locks

I believe that Sacco and Vanzetti were innocent

Just like I believe that Mumia is innocent

Like Assata is innocent

Like Peltier is innocent

Like Sundiata is innocent

Like Pagan is innocent

Like MOVE is innocent

Like Hayes is innocent

Like Graham is innocent

Like Odinga is innocent

Persecuted for their descent

I believe in flowers

I believe in equality

I believe in you and me

That’s why I

Believe in

Freedom
