There Are No Children Here

(But 6 Yr Old Eyes Are Everywhere)

by Tinesha Davis

"This is a very strange land, for as long as I've been
here I have yet to see a child, where are the children?"

Decorate the walls
with the pellet holes of bullets.
Nothing left but death,
seen all there is through it's
6 yr. old eyes,
 seen centuries worth of tragedy.
      (6 yr. old eyes)
Paid a high price for a life
that did not come with satisfactory.
      (6 yr. old eyes)
Baptized by the streets,
so who gives a flip about schoolwork.
Their tests show he's slow
yet smart enough to know a beat down hurts.
      (6 yr. old eyes)
See blistered fist tell the story
 of a battered body well.
      (6 yr. old eyes)
See we're dying to get to heaven
because today we dwell in an earthly hell
full of scraped of knees
 from broken concrete dreams
and body counts
 that even 'nam hasn't seen.
      (6 yr. old eyes)
See where parks have been turned
 into battlefield ground,
yet it really doesn't matter
 there are no children around.
Just 6 yr. old eyes
that's seen centuries worth of tragedy.
A veteran of war
 trapped in a child's body.
