Abandoned Cause

by Tinesha Davis

When equality is won
and long due respect gained
and the battle done
for prejudice is slain
are we quick to forget our cause?

We adopt that blue-eyed stare
and forget about our groundings
we put our nose up in the air
and pay no heed to our surroundings
then wonder did we ever have a cause?

We move in big fancy houses
name our children after Caucasians
lighter and lighter become our spouses
we disregard black occasions
Harriet, Martin, Malcolm what was their cause?

                   However;

To the next man we're still inferior
though they pretend we're all the same
when backs are turned they're superior
when doors are closed we're inane
and we are quick to close our doors.

We take for granted equal rights
and think for sure we have them
we ignore the equal slights
we overlook the way it's been
are you saddened 'cause the lost cause was lost?

But every now and then an event takes us back
when we forget about our past reality will ring
and the moment that we realized our slack
was when white hands had beat on black Rodney King
then we immediately took back up our cause.
