Little Black Girl

by TiaDee

I never cried a single tear when I was sad,
I was a little Black girl
Different
I never let them know I didn't have a daddy to call my own,
I was a little Black girl
Bastard
I never let them know, no one was there when I came home,
I was little Black girl
Alone
I never looked up, when they all surrounded me,
I was a little Black girl
Afraid
I never let them see me down or out, always on top of things,
I was a little Black girl
Strong
I never let them know it hurt when they called me names,
I was a little Black girl
Proud
I never let them know I ate dinner from whatever I found,
I was a little Black girl
Making do
I never let them know I was smarter than they knew,
I was a little Black girl
Intelligent
I never let them know I wanted to play their silly games too,
I was a little Black girl
Too cute
I never let them know, I didn't know what love was,
I was a little Black girl
In need
I never let them know..until I was grown.
I was a little Black girl being made into a Strong Black Woman,
with no regret, and filled with love.
