Freedom Box

by C. E. Stoney

she could climb inside her freedom box
when home was distant, a star

anytime

she could carry it, hold it so tight that the
breath engulf the spaces then squeeze out
silently, but she struggled with the weight
stepping heavy slugged pace called by the
brightest star, she could find a place called
home.

anytime

she would cross the line to make her freedom
box large, to stretch it and shape it to resemble
her mother's house, placing each of her brothers
and each one of her sisters into rooms, only to
be individuals, separate and content.
