Introspection

by Stacey L. Patterson

Through a looking glass they spy us
Descendants of a greater people, our people
The shame they must bleed
For what we’ve let ourselves become

How could we let the pale face devils
Pull the wool not only over our eyes
But completely over our heads?
Suffocating the life out of us
The lives they fought to give us

Tears falling, a river of sorrow
Growing, pushing against our ignorance
And blinded sight

Don’t be discouraged there is still time
To redeem our dignity, pride and self-worth

Wake up shake off the white haze induced slumber
Remember who we are, where we come from
See the strength in our beautiful brown counter parts
Be not their enemy, be their refuge

?
