Looking out the window yesterday I saw
Shackles, plantations, whips, long days, no pay, sadness
Lives short lived, auction block, a dream deferred
Underground Railroad, families fighting for survival
Migration, dogs after folks moving from state to state
Looking out the window today I see
Families’ successes and failures, shadows moving away
Needs, wants, and wishes placed open on the table
Worn hands hoping tomorrow will be a new day
Unleveled playing fields, flags with unfriendly colors
Looking out the window into the future
I see aspirations better living, and a level playing field
New visions and possibilities for advancement
Desires and motivation for people of color rising
Living out a new and brighter creation in the future
Looking out the window of life I see new light
