So Near Yet So Far

by Samuel Black

Riding an elephant
Down the narrow trail looking triumphant
Seeing the landscape
From a height
With lions moving
As in sudden flight

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
Guide at my side with packs on their backs
Paths that are too steep
Boots slipping on our feet
Birds in flight
Moving in the light

Praying in an Ethiopian Church
Preserve in rocks built by hands from man
Never touched by conquest
Hidden from the rest

Drinking milk
Freshly squeezed by experienced hands
Taste of life in the grassland

I am with thee
Respect me
Mother Africa
