I Am Strong

by Soyini Denise Liburd

When I have nothing left in me
and yet I give
Even though I am past empty,
I know I am strong.
When I can go no further
but my feet keep moving
even though I am crying
I know I am strong.

When a loud voice inside
shouts hate at me
But a quiet voice within
guides self-love back again
I feel all the pain
yet I know I am strong.

When I want to tell you that I hate you
but I hold my tongue
and finish the work that needs to be done.
When I reject fantasies
of the easy way out
and bear up the abuse
knowing it's only temporary
Even though Frustration whips me
I know I am strong

When I want to tell you that I love you
but I know these words would be your chains
so I restrain
from my own desires
whose intensity only I can know
Even as rejection echoes.
I know I am strong

When no one will hear me
Because no one will care
And there's nothing on my side
but grim determination
carrying me through my tears
my fears
that this is too much.
Yet I do it all
all on my own
even though I'm alone
I know I am strong

When I stumble,
when I fall
and then I rise again.
Managing to keep faith in me...
even as the mud clings to my body
I know I am strong

I cry, I stumble, I fall,
Empty, rejected, alone,... beaten
My description sounds weak
but don't let that fool you.
I am strong
because I endure
these things and more
I am strong
because I keep moving on.
