Sixteen

by Shayla Day

She’s alone
She’s thinking
Where can she find a home?
A home on the streets doesn’t exist
How much further must she roam?
Should she search until daybreak or stop at midnight?
Either way she’ll still be homeless
Either way she loses sight

She’s alone
She’s thinking
Where can she find a meal?
Food on the streets is poisonous
Should she go to the store and steal?
Should she search until daybreak or stop at midnight?
Either way she’ll still be homeless
Either way she loses sight

She’s alone
She’s thinking
Where can she find love?
Love on the streets is dangerous
She’ll still as innocent as a dove
Should she search until daybreak or stop at midnight?
Either way she’ll still be homeless
Either way she loses sight

She’s alone
She’s thinking
Is she going to be a mother?
Will she bear a human life that’s as precious as the other?
Should she have an abortion and risk being seen?
Either way she’ll still be lonely
Either way she’ll still be sixteen
