A Call

by Kenneth Najee Shakir

this is a call that has been made before
by men and women of the past,
it is to those, "Young, Gifted, & Black"
my call is to the nubian man
to try and help him see again
be he young, be he old
it's time to listen to what's being told
our nubian queens are struggling still
to conquer that steep hill
carring burdens to heavy to bear
carrying our share,
and where are we when the burdens get heavy
down in the valley, trying to get ready!
hanging on to their dress hems
hollering and screaming
we are strong nubian men
depending on thier welfare checks
to get us out of some other mess
thinking we are grown
leaving children in 8 different homes
if we are to be the providers and maintainers of them
then come, my brothers, let us be men
