Grand Momma's Love

by Yolanda Shabazz

There’s never been a time
You didn’t know what to do or say
Sometimes, hugs would replace words
You’d whisper softly, “It’ll be okay.”
You’re wise in wisdom beyond both our ages
Does living make it so?
Or do you conference with sages

Your advice is free
To folks of great learning
And to folks stuck on the bottom
Where life’s always churning
Shelter babies from their mothers
When hearts wax cold
Helped the neighbor confess
“I want to live – to grow old.”

I don’t know what to say!
Whatever I buy, you won’t let me give.
Answer is always the same
It’s not for money, or things, that I live.
Just wanna be right, do some good
As I pass thru this way.
Want it to be on my ledger
When I met my Maker, someday.
