Call Me

by Yolanda Shabazz

Please take the call on hold, line two
The caller has made several attempts to reach you
Corded or cordless, it won’t leave me alone
It can reach out and touch when I’m not near a phone

Business or personal, hold all calls except my wife
Warned me for years, “The phone is becoming your life.”
Looking for a phone in the pouring down rain
“This phone’s out of order. Would you like to complain?”

Been on a cruise far out to sea
Received a page, “Urgent! Please ring me.”
In between cities, I’m calling ahead
Before I can unpack, a call to turn down the bed.

In mid-day traffic, when driving can be hell
“You weren’t in the office, so I called on the cell.”
Pager, flip phone, faxes falling to the floor
“Can you take one more call before you walk out the door?”

Non-stop! Phones are ringing
Always a need to communicate
“No! This time take a message
The telephone can wait.”
