Broken Dreams

by Yolanda Shabazz

	Home from the war
	A decorated colored soldier
Another reminder that war is hell
	Likened to oppression and racism
A shoe box is where you kept your honors

				Hidden

	Years followed you
	With a drink in hand
	Struggling against demons
	Robbed
	Of what should have been

			        Surviving

	In a peculiar way
The fallout from your own personal war
	Eventually, you gave up!
Letting someone else occupy the person you once were
That is the hardest to forgive.
