I remember in the day
boldly auditioning for ballet.
Was told, "good but body a negro shape"
What's a negro shape? Can we debate?
Tried out for another part--
now told, "You are too dark."
God, You've created me to be free
why can't others see all of me?
Talented, confident, a dream
fought hard to make the scene.
Judge me for what I can do
no way I'll play the coon.
Back then we hoped for the best
although living among the rest.
Tired of white centerfolds
causing black women to lose their souls.
Reality check, thick don't mean fat
now other women kill to look like that.
