For You My Friend

by Sakira Dillard

They say men and women can’t be friends
But you and I defy that lie
When you push aside the attraction
and look below into someone’s soul
Friends, based not on history but based
on spirits gone past and through
We came together with baggage of past
relationships, never stopping to change or
effect our view
Your insight into my life brings clarity to unseeing eyes
My happiness and joy brings light and wonder to yours
The added complication of lust and desire,
are pushed to the back
Unimportant in the overall scheme of things
What I need, from a man.
Attention, compassion, understanding, laughter, joy
appreciation you give freely
Daily we build a friendship based not on nights of loving passion
but on days of interesting, flowing conversation, knowledge and
understanding of past pains, hurts and mistreatments.
You my friend, me your friend
Standing tall together.
Happy free to give, to receive, to be and receive

Loved with a freedom not based upon longing and desire
Based upon a kindred spirit and appreciation of art and culture
With you, I find a reflection of me with a male distinction,
description and foundation. Not taking, taking, taking
only giving with out measure, with out restraint
Friends.
