The Masquerade Ball

by Russell Nichols

(inspired by “We Wear the Mask”
  by Paul Laurence Dunbar)

i saw the truth and hid my eyes
a fallen youth that lives in lies
and dancin’ ‘round while in disguise
come join this masquerade

staring off into the sky
i’m there and caught the bluest eye
the truth i saw was crucified
destroyed in wrath’s parade

children waltz in all directions
instilled with fear and false perception
they know their role but lost connection
when told to act their age

in this scene of blinding eyes
where bodies lie from dying minds
and mommies cry in trying times
the souls of blacks enslaved

we wear the mask to hide our truth
and bear the path as finest fruit
it’s strange but redefined as proof
we’re free at last and saved

my rebirth was foretold in drum
my eyes now bask in golden sun
i rise, unmask my soul unsung
and leave this masquerade.
