It's Elementary

by Russell Nichols

enslaved by a chain of events
pain in past and present tense
it remains masking evidence
of black precedence
i saw my reflection
on the blackboard
and followed it
hoping to find truth
still
white chalk outlines
black youth
carrying the burden of proof
on laden shoulders
we are the unknown soldiers
regurgitating on distorted manuscript
from the man who stripped
emancipation from our lips
thirsty for knowledge
we eagerly takes sips
of deluded delusions
carbonated confusion
in half-empty glasses
too drunk to see the illusion
of division into classes
microcosmic foreshadowing
before the shattering of dreams
the pupil has been blinded
