We Can't Forget

by Walter Rooks

We stepped onto New World chained,
with weary bodies black,
beaten, half-dead.

We moved with hurt hearts bleeding,
bloody tears from eyes
crying Africa.

We worked with families torn apart,
in endless fields of
no escape.

We tried many times,
but voices were whipped,
hopes buried and dreams hung.

We fight with odds against us,
surviving still,
we can’t forget.
