The Arrangement

by Walter Rooks

The black boys were last.
It was arranged that way, for them
To be tired, frustrated, hungry.

They slept outside, beyond the laughter,
Beneath the arrogance and waste
Of white men.

Despite the arrangement, expectations were exceeded.
All the interference in the world could not prove otherwise.
If nothing else, essentially they were human.
