Black Sugar

by Rodney Wilson

There is no disputing the essence of a black woman
Dark skinned or otherwise

With the bold effects of straight black coffee
She's rich chocolate with a set of eyes

Thin or thick
Take your pick
Her love is what we seek
With an inner beauty that can pierce the coldest heart
Her blackness is molasses sweet

She’s invigorating
Stimulating
Confrontational
And inspirational
And yet, her demeanor we can't understand

She’s like Chinese arithmetic
A beautiful web of complexity
An eternal mystery to man

In our efforts to obtain such knowledge
In exhaustion we continuously fail
Though we love her so
We’ll never know
Why her black sugar forever prevails
