Why Did God Make Flies

by C. Preau

It was the hottest day ever in Bed Stuy. The heat had risen so high, I thanked God for the tree branches that hung so low, shading me from the sun's scorn. I was in a place of bliss, just me and the big elm tree. A glass of mama's cold lemonade touched my lips, but before a drop of its promising pleasure could touch my tongue, a fly stole my taste of Heaven! How dare that fly enjoy my lemonade before me! I angrily threw away what remained of my tainted treat.

I ran to mama and demanded an explanation. "Mama," I asked bewildered, "Why did God make flies?" The purpose for them boggled my eight year old mind.

Mama said, "Baby they are an important part in the cycle of life. They have a purpose as do you and I. God carefully crafted them as He did me and you. Whether great or small in our eyes, in every season and in every time, there is a reason and a rhyme for every creature under the sun!"

Years later I realize the wisdom gained because of that greedy fly! In my most doubtful times, when I question the significance of even my own existence, I remember mama's words on that hot summer day. "Whether great or small in our eyes, in every season and in every time, there is a reason and a rhyme for every creature under the sun!"

If more souls had heard these words in their own times of doubt, imagine how many lives could be saved.
