Aftermath of Katrina

by Catherine Prater

As I stand here in
The Red Cross line

I think it’s about 9.00
In the am, wondering
How can I donate

When all I have is my time

I pray to you dear Lord
To show me what can I do

When all I have is my time

And a kind word or two
I can only imagine the pain
When you’re watching your life’s work
Going down the ocean’s drain

And you have lost everything
Except your life yet you can still
Squeeze out a smile

And choke back the
Tears that lay dormant
In your heart

Which will manifest itself
at another un-opportune time

As you gather up your
Life and what’s left of
Your love ones and your remains

To be taken to a different
Habitat and forced to start life again

And all I have is my time

I thank the dear Lord
For what I have
Because when you are
Left with nothing

My tiny house seems
Like a palace to me

Which is open to someone
Who will need to be

For the lord is teaching
Me humility

And to treat you neighbor
As you would your family
