Versus

by Eric Payne

I thought that this
was supposed to be about us…
not just you
not just me
but somehow we lost sight
gave flame to the fight
as the flame flicked out of the life
that began when I first laid eyes on you
and left a wasteland
of night scattered love affairs
tormented memories
a blight on the memory synapses
no sound
as I fall down
on my knees
and beg my Lord please
don't let me hate you
for hating me
spiraling along the fluid of dreams dreamed
floating on breaths breathed
heaving from my lungs
a bunch of "I don't knows"
and bad harvests
of our sour seeds sowed
I don't know
do I even want to?

it was you and me
just us
versus the world
in the end
it was you and me
just us
versus
each other.
