A Passing Want

by Eric L. Payne

I want a girl...um, excuse me,
a woman,
who has
no need
for me.
Because as far as this world goes,
she's handling her business.
But
she wants for my company,
comfort...
caress...
concern..
She's cool when she
sends her voice through the phone
to tell me what she wants ---
if it will be a problem
to crash at my spot.
She needs a break from the rat's pace,
to kick off her shoes and unwind in my space.
No superlatives,
conditionals,
or expectations.
Just knows what she wants
...wants it from me.
