The Cold Shoulder

by Pat T.

Bubbly center throbbing
Growing
Knowing
Deep within
Analyzing the undercurrents
Criticizing the signals of offense
Annoyance and disturbance

My presence is unwanted

Eyes that before were dancing
Become stone cold snubbery
Hard black balls of jealous resentment
Pelt my unassuming innocence
My response of slumped shoulders
And lowered head replaces
A gait that once romped freely

Now hesitant

Far away from away from the shore
Without anchor

Enemy territory has declared me
Guilty and judged to be damned
And sentenced
Afraid to do the wrong things
Afraid to say the wrong things
Afraid to clip the wrong wings
In a stranger's house
Nothing is my own
I am as defenseless as a new born lamb
Except my self respect will not allow slaughter
As the prey is as cunning as the predator
Silence screeches through the air
The cause of such subtle bitterness arcane
The remedy just as tricky
My attempts at innocuous conversation rejected
The innocent remains perplexed
The gauntlet has been thrown

He doesn't realize who he's dealing with
