The Negro Of A New Day

by Baba Olutunde Olufemi

I am the Negro of a new day
Call me a black panther!
Call me a freedom fighter!
Call me a revolutionist!
But never call me a nigger
because, you see
Those are fighting words
and it doesn't matter
If your skin looks like mines
Never call me a nigger
To do so will be like a slap in the face
A reminder of what I faced
As a symbol
As a sentimental pet
used/abused
Then left to drown in his own blood and sweat.

I am the Negro of a new day
I am the result of spiritual consciousness
I am the result of truth seeking
Igbo chants and bush medicine.
I have been liberated\self-educated
I am no-longer a symbol or a token
I am the fire in spirit that was unbroken
With bigotry\hatred\degradation
Injustice\obscenity/immunization
So when you look at me
Look beyond all past definitions
Of what a Negro use to be
Fore I have evolved into something brand new.

I am the Negro of a new day
So don't expect me to walk with my head down
Or carry on with my life as a clown
I take my life personal
I say what I mean because I am what I speak
And you can bet your life on it
If you hit me, I won't be turning the other cheek.
