Ghetto Boy (He Knew)

by Baba Olutunde Olufemi

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

Ghetto boy knew how to bring out the voices

    of his wood spirit drum

He knew their languages one by one

    and where they traveled from

He knew that he could escape the grips

and the polluted grime of the slums

with the invocations that he conjured

through the high and lows of the drums

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

Ghetto boy knew since an earlier age that if he

believed in himself that he could

do anything that he put his mind into

and strongly knew that he would.

He knew to prepare himself with a well

thought out and put together plan

its what you do to discover and embrace

the secret of the inner man

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

Ghetto boy knew the people who were peeping

out of their windows from across the street

was feeling what he was feeling

from the vibrations of the African warrior beat.

He knew there was more to his life

than what the American system had to show

so through the drums he poured out

the knowledge he had grown to know.

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

    Ka-di-ka-di-ka-boom-boom-boom-boom

Play ghetto boy, play, play your song

Play the rhythms of your life all day long.
