Don't Be So Cold

by Odetta Wright

I caught his eye from across the room
My heart skipped a beat
As I sipped my Merlot
I quickly turned
And searched for someone else
Not him

Soon he was beside me
Smile was the color of ivory tusks
Asking me to stare at their brilliance
He wanted to dance
I said no
He wanted to talk
I said no
He bowed and smiled
Went to the other side again

That night I dreamed of his smile
It haunted my dream
It heated my heart
It held my soul

I saw him again
Across another room
I caught his eye
As I sipped my Merlot
I quickly claimed a space at his side

I waited for his smile
That smile that seized my being
I waited and waited
But he only stared at me

He bowed and excused himself
As he crossed to the other side
To give that ray of sunshine
To someone who desired warmth
