Fairy Tale

by Novella Kennedy

You are a fairy tale to me
A dream that will never be
A reflection of what I want to see
A painful reality that I must release

You felt like gold in my hand
All the qualities of what I want in a man
All your faults I was willing to withstand
Slipping through my fingers like priceless sand

To give you up is not an easy task
But there is something of you I must ask
To leave me a little of you so I can mask
This fairy tale that was never meant to last

I couldn't see the forest for the trees
I wanted my heart to be filled with thee
I thought you would be the one to set my spirit free
Now I am locked down in anguish and misery

How I wanted you to be my lover
How would I know that you would seek another?
Could I have prevented what I discovered?
How could I know that you loved another brother?
