I Saw A Man

by Nii Parkes

I saw a man speak today
I saw his lips move
I felt the fire of his fury
though I heard him not

...then I saw glistening
on his forehead
the same sweat
that ran down the deep grooves
planted on his forebear's
dark, sun-kissed backs
the same sweat
that salted the wounds
on his antecedent's
much-slapped faces

and I understood
though I heard him not
