Agony Of A Black Woman

by Susan Nava

A daughter
created in the factory of sons.
Her story written for her even before it's begun.
From foetus to female -meaning for sale
and never, NEVER, not even once does she envy males.
You see, she's beauty on legs
And highly proud of her sex
Indians, Arabs, even men of Babylon desire her
village women admire her
feminists condemn her
and yet her
nappy hair, she places carefully in a headwrap
covers her ebony skin with brown powder
over her broad nose
full lips -she decorates them with lipstick.
Dresses in warm colours
and walks in a manner that makes her behind wiggle.
Trying to seduce her ivy-league educated, internationally-travelled man
from his equally educated, internationally-travelled white woman
who has no respect whatsoever for his culture,
his family, his friends, his needs..
Will she succeed?

Agony of a black woman indeed.
