Woman In the Fields

by Mochaoa `oa Afrika

On sun-baked fields
Woman you work so hard
Under the blazing flames
Of the sun
Woman you keep your faith

Your sweat falls like rain drops
And with the sweat of your brow
You pray to the soil
To offer the bread of life

Even though you sing a song
Of inspiration
You eyes narrates a story
Of frustration
Even though you chant
A psalm of hope
You face portays a picture
Of a broken heart

When you wearily
Put down your hoe
And breast-feed
Your little "khosatsana" (princess)
I can see that burden on your shoulders
Woman do not get discouraged
Woman be of great courage
"etsoe `Ma ngoana o t`soara
 thipa ka bohaleng"
(a woman is a bearer of all hardships)

With the slavery on the fields
You now have to cope
You are now a stream of hope
A stream that naurishes
Nations
It`s now you who fills
The granaries.
