I'd Like To Be The Man

by Michael D. Brown

I'd like to be the man
whose ring
wears your finger
with martial pride.
Never removing
or being removed.
Vowing in the presence
of witnesses,
of God,
virtues until
the parting of death
which can only part
in one small sense
what took a lifetime to unite
into a oneness
that needs two
to make the math work,
to make the rhythm flow
enough to be a verse.
I'd like to be that man.
