Letter to Juror B-37

by Brenda J McIntosh

I hope you walk down a street carrying candy and tea
When you realize you’re being followed
by someone you really can’t see
When your heart is pounding and you become afraid,
will you defend yourself or run away?
I’m just a kid, not quite 17
I don’t know if the person behind me is the enemy
What does he want? Why is he following me?
Is he a rapist? Is he a robber?
What could he possibly want with me?
I’m simply walking down a public street
Why is this man bothering me?
This man is creepy and he is going to kill me
Juror B-37 you want me to flee
This man was stalking me!
Now I’m dead and you pass judgment on me
According to you I caused my death by walking free
Juror B-37 why did you blame me?
