In My America

by Brenda J McIntosh

Saw a young black man riding his skateboard
As I got near he looked at me with fear
He didn’t know if I was male or female
He didn’t know if I was going to shoot or smile
He didn’t know if he was going to be killed
On the first day of the Trayvon Martin trial
It saddens me that in my America that’s his reality
As a person of color can I live in this nation?
Free from random acts of violence?
Subtle innuendos, trickery treachery all around
The powers that be will not hire
How can we play their game flawlessly?
Young Black men under constant fire
Always wondering if today is their last
Is this 2013 or are we still living in the past?
