The Fall

by Karla MarKay

Which is more malign?
When rock bottom is hit?
Or an endless decline
Through a bottomless pit?

Giving one’s all
Still only to miss,
Not breaking the fall
Through the gloomy abyss.

No rescuer after
The sufferer’s cry,
But echoing laughter
Sadistic reply.

No affirmation
Of prisoner’s release,
Just acceleration
As depth does increase.

Violently sinking
In torment descending,
Yet all the while thinking
Escape from Doom’s ending.

Helplessly falling
In tortured detention,
Yet ceaselessly calling
For swift intervention.

Then a mighty arm stretches
Down to depths inconceivable,
And easily fetches
One presumed irretrievable.
