Forgotten Ship

by Brenda Louise Lewis

Yesterday sailed a slave ship
Capture human brutality
Chained, contorted,
bound, defiant, sprawling,
reeking scents
of human flesh
in a dark and deadly hole,
creaking, crickety,
wooden planks,
rocking to the motion
of a thoughtless sea
of suffering and tears,
moaning mercy
to a tribal home.
O'er the horizon,
a distant shore,
an auction block,
a laborer's plight,
comely protest,
sacrifice for freedom,
trumpeting a moment
for justice,
a slippery vestige
of a journey
on yesterday's slave ship.
