Rib Caged Heart

by Lawrence Christopher

A heart of love leaps
With the rhythm of anticipation
Thumping hard to the body
Announcing its emancipation
Sharing its love for living
With every pulsation

But a heart under attack
By the feeling of misuse
Can find it hard
To recover from abuse
So it hardens itself
To be an encaged recluse

The rib caged heart beats
To a compelled flutter
To sustain a life
Always in service to others
Relentless in expressing itself
With so little as a murmured utter
A rib caged heart
Sustains life to a lover

A heart of love beats of happy feelings almost there
Of joy and happiness despite despair
Pumping life throughout the veins
Engorging some pleasure to a pain
But a rib caged heart
Beats under duress
From the mere chance of love
At worst and at best

The rib caged heart beats
To a compelled flutter
To sustain a life
Always in service to others
Relentless in expressing itself
With so little as a murmured utter
A rib caged heart
Sustains life to a lover
