Grandma's Number

by Latorial Faison

Grandma got bills to pay
and she can't help her kids can't help themselves
it's another two weeks until she collects
the remnants of her next disability check

They think money grows on trees
would you please tell em'
don't ask me for nothing
with my lil' money i've gotta do something

but no . . .
everybody's got a light bill due
repossessions too
and the rent due date's gotta wait

You gotta work for dirt
around here
sitting on your sorry rear
won't keep your bills in the clear

damn welfare case
is all the sense it makes
healthy and sound grown folks
who can't talk or live what they know

but will ask me for my last dollar
cause they don't wanna work a blue collar
job . . . that's sick
rather sit on their ass, watch soaps and get wic

while I work a white man's home over
gotta make that extra honey
tide myself over
til' I get my hands on some money

systems never work . . . and they never will
cause the world's most intelligent
can't swallow a single birth control pill
but you gotta pave their way, help pay for their mistakes

Ignorance . . . is catching
the worst disease our kind ever did see
but grandma got bills to pay
so . . . don't dial my number today
