Black Women Of Literature

by LaMesha L. Craft

The Black women of literature
From Alice to Whoopi to Maya
Always light my heart on fire

Be strong, sexy, and free
Their brilliant voices
Sing to me
While Erykah's music
Serves as the melody

They say:
To hell with
Society's idea of beauty;
Pale skin, size six frames, and
Paper-thin lips
But,
Be proud to have your momma's
Ass and hips,
Love your almond brown skin
And full voluptuous lips.

They say:
You are WOMAN
At it's best

Having read stories of
Black women's
Unimaginable strength and pride
And how even in their worst
Moments they remain
Dignified

I choose to
Write this poem
Keeping their
Spirits
Alive!
