A Letter to an Inmate

by Kennie

I hope this letter finds you well
I know that you feel like
you have been condemned to hell
just sitting and waiting in a jail cell
for an answer

I check everyday for your release date
here at home I sit and patiently wait
for you to come home to me

but know deep down in your heart
you are already free and
God will have the final victory

I still recall our late night
talks as we prayed together
for your brand new start
I know that the lord heard
our cry to many black men
incarcerated with no fairness delegated
by the court system

3 strikes and your out
everything has been wiped out
with no clean slate to start from
so I understand why some brothas
go on the run.

No baby I am not
saying its right that why I pray
for you every night to change
your ways and do what’s right
no more thuggi,n hustlingambling and
getting caught up in gun fights

To many mothers
crying out for their babies
no many babies crying out
for their daddies to come home
so many brother seating silent
and alone.
